Apple cinnamon breadsticks are so fluffy, soft and flavorful.
They are so delicious and perfect for a brunch bread basket or for a cozy night paired with a cup of hot chocolate or tea.
Homemade apple cinnamon breadsticks is a version of our favorite cinnamon rolls without the yummy cream cheese icing. However they are so close to the cinnamon rolls taste. As the breadsticks were baking, the house smelled amazing like a bakery.
In addition this recipe is also budget friendly as the ingredients you need to make it are very cheap. The entire tray of breadsticks will cost you from $6 to $10 depending if you are using organic ingredients or not.
Ingredients in Apple cinnamon breadsticks:
There are 2 parts to this recipe. Here is what you need for the dough and the topping:
Dough:
- Flour – I used bread flour but all-purpose flour works as well.
- Eggs – use the eggs at room temperature.
- Salt – brings out the flavors in the dough.
- Sugar – white sugar gives the sweetness to the dough.
- Milk – warm up the milk to be lukewarm to touch.
- Butter – can be at room temperature or slightly melted.
- Vanilla – flavors the dough.
- Active dry yeast – check the expiration date.
Topping:
- Apple sauce – I used apple sauce to replace the butter from the topping
- Cinnamon – is the key for the amazing flavor
- Brown sugar - added for sweetness and color
Tips for making the best Apple cinnamon breadsticks:
Do not overheat the milk – if milk is too hot it will kill the yeast. Similarly use room temperature butter – it will be easier to incorporate it into the dough.
Ensure the yeast is not expired – try to proof ½ teaspoon of yeast in a small cup of warm water and sugar. If it will foam in few minutes the yeast is good to use.
Do not over proof the dough in first and second rise.
Make sure the strips of dough are as equal as possible in size so that they bake evenly. However when shaping the strips, their size and how long or thick they are depends on the size of your tray.
You can make the dough the night before. Follow all the steps before baking and keep the tray in the fridge covered with plastic wrap. Next morning pull out the tray from the fridge and let the dough come to room temperature for approximately 30 minute. Finish by baking the breadsticks.
To freeze these breadsticks, complete all the steps before baking, wrap the pan in plastic foil and after that in a big clear plastic bag to avoid freezer burn. Freeze them up to 10 weeks. Pull the tray out from freezer the night before, thaw the tray in the fridge with the breadsticks still covered. After that pull out the tray from fridge and allow the dough to come to room temperature for 30 minutes. Finish by baking the breadsticks.
Cinnamon breadsticks can be stored at room temperature in a plastic or glass container with a lid on. You can reheat them next day in microwave for few seconds.

Apple cinnamon breadsticks
These homemade Apple cinnamon breadsticks are so fluffy, soft and flavorful.
They are so delicious and perfect for a brunch bread basket or for a cozy night paired with a cup of hot chocolate or tea.
Equipment
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 1 ⅓ cup warm whole milk
- 2 eggs
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 ½ teaspoon active active dry yeast
- ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
For the topping:
- 1 cup apple sauce
- ¼ cup white sugar
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- 1 ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, add milk, eggs, sugar, salt, vanilla. Attach the dough hook and mix on low for 1 minute.
- Slowly add the flour and yeast and mix until slightly sticky. Add the softened butter. Increase the speed to medium and keep mixing for about 10 minutes. If you do not have a standing mixer you can mix the dough by hand a little longer until the dough is not sticking to your hands. The dough should be smooth and elastic after kneading.
- When the dough pull away from the sides of the bowl and form a soft ball stop the mixer and cover the bowl with a plastic wrap. Let the dough rise until double in size for about 45-60 minutes depending on the room temperature.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and divide into 8 equal portions. Using a scale makes things easier.
- Roll each piece of dough on a long log, double in length as the length of your tray. Grab the log from the middle, fold it in half and twist both halves around each other. Place the breadsticks on silicon baking mat or parchment-lined 30x40 cm baking sheet. Cover the breadsticks lightly with kitchen towel and let them rise at room temperature for about 25-30 minutes.
- Meanwhile in a small bowl make the topping. Combine the white and brown sugar with the cinnamon.
- Toward the end of rising preheat the oven to 350F/176C.
- Brush the breadsticks with apple sauce and sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture across the breadsticks.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until light golden brown.
- Enjoy!
